Through the first half of the ski season, New Mexico is on track.

George Brooks, the director of Ski New Mexico told Albuquerque Business First on Wednesday that through December, ski areas were seeing a slowdown. Then, as the new year kicked off, more people returned to the slopes.

The association doesn’t release exact numbers from individual ski areas.

“What was happening is that because of the dates that Christmas fell, and New Year’s Eve fell, those that would have come and spent another day or two in December went skiing in January,” Brooks said.

“After the New Year’s break, we seem to be tracking about where we were last year,” he said.

Last year was one of the best in recent memory, with Ski New Mexico counting 854,963 skier visits. In 2010-2011, the state saw 695,000 skier visits.
