Now, the former Garduño’s restaurant at Academy and San Mateo Boulevard will be called a Sadie’s.

The restaurant chain bought the former Garduño’s restaurant in August, and plans to open it as a new Sadie’s location — the chain’s fourth — by this summer.

It’s the latest step in an expansion plan for Sadie’s.

“It’s been a landmark location for years,” said Stafford, a co-owner of Sadie’s, on Monday. “I remember back in the day when there was Seagull Street and Garduño’s, and the lots would be so full you couldn’t park there.”

Garduño’s filed bankruptcy in 2010, and shortly afterward closed the location.

Sadie’s is doing significant remodeling to the restaurant, Stafford said, giving it a New Mexican motif.

Sadie’s director of operations, Jim Garcia, said the new restaurant will employ about 120, bringing Sadie’s total employment to 500.

The restaurant should seat about 275 and have a full bar.
